Digital vs Offset Printing: The Short Answer
Digital printing is usually cheaper and more flexible for short runs, changing artwork and multiple SKUs. Offset printing usually becomes more economical as quantities rise and still has the edge when exact Pantone colours, large solid areas, very fine typography or strict long-run colour control matter.
But I would never choose between digital and offset printing from quantity alone.
A 6,000-box order can be an excellent digital job if those boxes are split across six different designs. A 750-box run can justify offset if one exact Pantone colour and a perfectly smooth solid background are central to a luxury brand identity.
That is why the question is not simply, “Which printing method is cheaper?”
The better question is:
Which printing method produces the right result at the lowest total commercial risk for this particular packaging job?
At Custom Packly, we normally look at quantity first, then SKU count, artwork, colour requirements, board, finishes, deadlines, repeat-order plans and how much finished packaging the business can realistically store.
My rough starting point is simple.
Below 500 to 1,000 boxes, I investigate digital first.
Around 1,000 to 2,000 boxes, I compare both.
At roughly 2,500 boxes, offset becomes much more interesting.
At 5,000 to 10,000+ boxes of one stable design, offset is usually extremely difficult for digital to beat on unit cost.
Then I look for the exceptions, because the exceptions are where the expensive mistakes happen.
What Is the Difference Between Digital and Offset Printing?
Digital printing sends artwork directly from the digital file to the printing equipment. There are no conventional printing plates to manufacture for each colour before production starts.
Offset lithographic printing uses physical plates and ink stations. The artwork is separated into colours, plates are prepared, the press is set up and calibrated and production begins once registration and colour are correct.
That difference creates two very different economic models.
Digital has low setup costs but a relatively steady running cost per printed sheet.
Offset has substantially higher setup costs but becomes extremely efficient once the press is running.
This is why digital tends to dominate shorter quantities while offset becomes increasingly attractive as fixed setup costs are spread over thousands of units.
For buyers planning custom packaging, the printing method should therefore be decided alongside the box structure, board and artwork rather than treated as an isolated production choice.
Is Digital or Offset Printing Cheaper?
Digital printing is normally cheaper at low quantities. Offset printing is normally cheaper at high quantities.
The dangerous part is pretending there is one universal number where that changes.
There isn't.
I have seen brands concentrate so heavily on finding the lowest price per box that they accidentally choose the more expensive business decision.
Why Offset Costs More Before Production Starts
An offset press can consume hundreds of pounds before the first sellable box has been printed.
The makeready process may include plate imaging, press preparation, ink loading and mixing, roller cleaning, registration adjustment, colour calibration and waste sheets.
Each printing colour needs a physical plate. Standard CMYK normally means cyan, magenta, yellow and black plates. Add a Pantone spot colour and another plate and ink station may be required.
Print inside and outside and the setup can become more involved again.
The press operator then has to bring the job into register and balance the ink.
It is normal for material to be consumed during this calibration process. Depending on the job, roughly 100 to 500 sheets of the real board may be needed before the press is producing approved sellable print.
That waste belongs to the job economically, even though the customer never receives those sheets as boxes.
For many offset packaging jobs, the initial setup can easily represent £300 to £1,000+ before meaningful production volume starts.
Why Digital Starts Cheaper
Digital removes much of that conventional makeready.
There are no lithographic plates to manufacture, no separate physical CMYK plate set to mount and far less material needs to be sacrificed simply to bring the press into colour and registration.
That makes digital disproportionately attractive at low quantities.
The downside is that digital has a flatter cost curve.
Its running cost remains linked to machine time, ink or toner consumption, press charges and material. Ordering more lowers the unit cost, but it does not fall as dramatically as offset.
Offset behaves almost in reverse.
Its expensive setup gets divided across more and more units, so the cost per box can fall very quickly as volume grows.
There Is No Magic Crossover Quantity
There is no magic quantity where offset suddenly becomes cheaper because the economic tipping point is a moving target.
The physical footprint of the box matters.
The number of artwork variants matters.
Pantone colours matter.
Inside printing matters.
The number of repeat runs matters.
Board choice matters.
And the financial risk of owning thousands of obsolete boxes matters.
That is why I dislike statements such as “digital is cheaper below exactly 1,000 boxes” or “offset always wins above exactly 2,000”.
Those figures can be useful starting points.
They are not production laws.
If packaging cost is already a major concern, how much custom packaging costs in the UK puts printing into the wider context of size, board, quantity, structure and finishing.
What I Normally Check at Each Quantity
At 100, 250 or 500 boxes, I would investigate digital first. Offset makeready normally places too much fixed cost onto too few units.
At approximately 1,000 boxes, I price both where the specification justifies it. This is the interesting crossover territory.
At 2,500 boxes, I generally investigate offset first, especially for one stable artwork file.
At 5,000 or 10,000+ boxes, offset normally has a major economic advantage when the same artwork is being repeated.
But add ten SKUs and the maths can reverse very quickly.
Box Size Can Change the Printing Economics
One of the least understood variables is sheet utilisation.
Printing presses do not normally think in terms of individual finished boxes. They print larger sheets that are later cut and converted into individual carton blanks.
Imagine a small folding carton where 20 blanks fit on one master sheet.
If an offset press consumes 300 sheets during setup and calibration, the theoretical blank equivalent is 6,000 cartons.
Now imagine a much larger structure where only two blanks fit on each sheet.
The same 300 setup sheets represent only 600 blanks.
That changes how heavily setup waste affects the economics of the finished box.

This is one reason we consider the actual structural layout rather than quoting digital or offset from quantity alone. If the physical structure is still undecided, custom box styles and shapes can help narrow the format before print economics are compared.
The Lowest Price Per Box Can Be the Most Expensive Decision
Suppose a startup can order 500 digitally printed boxes for £3 each.
Total packaging spend: £1,500.
It is then offered 5,000 offset boxes for £1 each.
That sounds spectacular. The box is one-third of the unit price.
But the business now has to spend £5,000 rather than £1,500.
An extra £3,500 of working capital is sitting in packaging inventory.
That is fine if the design, product and demand are stable.
It is a serious risk if they are not.
Ingredients change. Legal copy changes. Product sizes change. Brand identities change. Postal requirements change. Retailers request different information. A product underperforms and another SKU suddenly becomes the bestseller.
Packaging that cost £1 per box is not cheap if 3,000 unused units eventually go into recycling.
This is why I never look at unit price in isolation.
A Real Case Where the “Cheaper” Quote Cost More
We once quoted an ecommerce subscription business that ultimately chose a competitor's offset option.
Their offset unit price was around 20% cheaper than our digital alternative.
The catch was quantity.
They had to commit to approximately 6,000 boxes, roughly a year's supply, to achieve the attractive offset price.
Four months later their postal requirements changed and a slightly shallower box became commercially preferable.
Around 4,000 perfectly printed boxes were now the wrong specification.
The stock they had purchased specifically to save money became the costliest part of the project.

A smaller digital run would have carried a higher unit price but allowed the structure to change at the next production cycle.
That experience reinforced a rule I use repeatedly:
Packaging buying is not about obtaining the cheapest box. It is about buying the right amount of the right box at the right stage of the business.
Which Printing Method Looks Better?
If a customer asks me directly, “Which actually looks better, digital or offset?”, my answer is:
Offset printing still looks better.
But there is an important caveat.
The difference matters most when the artwork exposes the weaknesses of digital printing.
For perhaps 90% of modern packaging artwork made from photography, gradients, mixed graphics and conventional typography, a top-tier industrial digital press can produce packaging that looks genuinely premium.
The average customer looking at a box on a UK retail shelf is highly unlikely to identify whether it was digitally printed or offset printed.
What customers notice are defects.
Poor colour.
Visible banding.
Fuzzy text.
Cracked ink.
Bad registration.
Different shades sitting beside one another on the same shelf.
The printing method matters because it reduces the risk of those failures for particular artwork.
Large Solid Colours Favour Offset
Offset wins clearly when artwork contains large, uninterrupted blocks of colour.
A clean pastel cosmetic carton or a box covered almost entirely in one deep corporate blue exposes the print method far more than a busy illustrated design.
Offset lays down colour very evenly.
The result can feel smooth and almost velvety across large solid areas.
Digital can produce excellent solids, but these areas are where banding or slight mottling can become visible.
If the entire visual identity depends on one pristine background colour, I am much more likely to discuss offset.
Pastels, Deep Colours and Gradients Behave Differently
Very pale colours can expose the dot structure used by digital equipment, particularly on less capable presses. Some pale shades may begin to look slightly grainy rather than perfectly continuous.
Deep digital colours can look extremely strong but may sometimes produce a surface character that feels glossier or more raised.
Gradients are a different story.
Modern digital equipment is very good at photographic transitions and detailed colour changes. Skies, landscapes, product photography and complex illustrations can look superb.
Offset can also reproduce photography beautifully, but complex four-colour artwork requires careful press calibration.
For brands still deciding how much decoration the box actually needs, packaging design ideas looks at colour, structure, finishes and premium presentation as one design system rather than separate effects.
Fine Text Still Gives Offset an Edge
Offset remains my preferred choice when extremely fine text reproduction is critical.
Think small ingredient declarations, legal copy, technical information and tiny vector graphics.
Because the plate creates a very clean printed edge, fine typography can remain exceptionally sharp.
High-end digital presses are also excellent, but microscopic inspection can occasionally reveal slight edge softness or tiny satellite droplets that are not present in good offset work.
Again, most consumers will never inspect a carton under magnification.
But when packaging carries a lot of small mandatory copy, those details matter.
Pantone Colour Is One of the Biggest Decision Points
If an exact Pantone colour is genuinely non-negotiable, offset is usually the safer route.
Offset can run a genuine pre-mixed Pantone spot ink.
Digital normally interprets the requested colour using its available ink system, often CMYK or an expanded gamut.
Modern digital colour reproduction is remarkably capable and can simulate a huge portion of Pantone colours closely.
Closely is not the same as exactly.
Some vibrant oranges, reflex blues and specialist colours remain difficult to reproduce perfectly from process inks.
For a startup experimenting with brand colours, that may not matter.
For an established luxury brand whose distinctive colour appears across packaging, retail fixtures and campaign material, it can matter enormously.
The available inks, board choices, coatings and finishing options can be assessed together under packaging customisation before the final print specification is locked.
Digital Is Excellent for Photography and Complex Artwork
The old idea that digital printing automatically means lower-quality packaging is outdated.
Modern industrial digital equipment can produce incredibly sharp, vibrant work.
In particular, I like digital for designs containing photography, detailed illustrations, multiple colours and continuous gradients.
When customers see properly produced digital packaging in a shop, they generally do not think, “This looks digitally printed.”
They think the packaging looks good.
Or it doesn't.
The method is invisible unless the artwork or production quality reveals it.

Colour Consistency Is More Complicated Than It Sounds
Across a very large continuous run, offset is extremely stable once the press is correctly calibrated.
Once colour is locked, producing thousands of consistent sheets is one of offset printing's greatest strengths.
Digital equipment can experience minor colour drift during very long runs as conditions inside the press change.
Repeat orders introduce another nuance.
A digital file is repeatable. If the equipment, substrate and calibration remain controlled, the same digital data can make repeat production relatively predictable.
Offset requires the press to be set up again.
Even if the same plates are available, ink balance, press conditions, humidity, board batch and operator calibration can all influence the result slightly.
This is why colour-controlled brands should keep approved specifications and physical references rather than assuming that saving an artwork PDF guarantees identical future colour.
Material Choice Can Change the Winner
Printing does not happen in isolation. The surface underneath the ink matters enormously.
SBS and FBB give both methods an excellent clean base.
Their smooth white surfaces support detailed artwork, strong colour and fine typography.
Raw kraft and uncoated stocks behave differently because the material absorbs ink and its natural brown tone changes the visible colour.
Some high-end digital systems can produce excellent opaque work on kraft. Offset can also use heavier ink coverage and white ink strategies where the production specification allows it.
Corrugated material introduces another consideration.
Direct digital printing onto corrugated board can be efficient for branded shipping and ecommerce packaging. Depending on the board and process, however, the physical fluting may influence how perfectly flat the printed surface appears.
For premium corrugated presentation, litho-lamination remains a powerful option. The graphics are offset printed onto a smoother sheet, then that printed sheet is laminated onto corrugated board.
If ecommerce is the main use case, custom mailer boxes make it easier to think about print alongside flute, protection, opening style and insert requirements.
Rigid packaging has another workflow again. Many premium rigid boxes use printed or finished paper wraps mounted over thick rigid board, so the print surface and finishing specification need to be planned alongside the final construction.

Digital Printing Can Crack at Creases
One defect I pay particular attention to on digitally printed folding cartons is crease cracking.
Some digital ink or toner systems create a printed layer that sits strongly on the surface.
When a heavily printed board is scored and folded, the printed layer can sometimes fracture along that fold and expose a pale line underneath.
Correct grain direction, scoring, material selection and protective coating can reduce the risk, but it should be considered before production.
Digital surfaces may also benefit from a protective varnish or laminate when scuffing is a concern.
Offset Has Its Own Failure Modes
Offset is not automatically perfect.
Poor registration is the classic example.
CMYK artwork relies on separate colour separations aligning correctly. If the plates move out of register, text or artwork edges can develop visible colour halos or ghosting.
Offset also depends heavily on correct press setup.
A technically superior printing method used badly is still bad printing.

Case Study: Why We Chose Digital for 6,000 Coffee Boxes
One of my favourite examples involved a premium single-origin coffee roaster.
The customer needed 6,000 auto-lock bottom cartons using 400gsm FBB.
At first glance, that sounded like an obvious offset job.
It wasn't.
The order was divided across six coffee varieties.
Each flavour required 1,000 boxes and each one had different graphics.
A conventional CMYK offset workflow would have required four plates per design.
Six designs meant 24 plates.
Suddenly the supposed efficiency of a 6,000-unit offset run looked very different.
We moved the project to industrial digital printing.
That allowed all six artwork files to move across the production workflow without repeatedly stopping for separate plate configurations.
The graphics also suited digital perfectly. Each pack used detailed photographic backgrounds inspired by the coffee's origin, including landscapes and colour gradients.
A soft-touch matte treatment gave the cartons the tactile retail finish the business wanted.
The change saved roughly £2,500 in upfront tooling and plate costs.
More importantly, it protected the launch deadline.
The expected offset route was approximately 14 working days in that situation. Digital production brought the print portion of the project down sufficiently for the packaging to be completed in roughly five working days, giving the customer valuable breathing room before a major trade event.
Six months later, the real strategic advantage became even clearer.
Two flavours had significantly outsold the others.
The reorder therefore no longer needed equal quantities.
The business could increase the strongest products to around 3,000 boxes and reduce weaker lines to roughly 500 units.
Digital allowed the SKU mix to change without penalising the brand for abandoning a fixed plate strategy.
This is why total quantity can be misleading.
Six thousand boxes did not make offset automatically cheaper because it was really six different 1,000-box print jobs hiding inside one purchase order.
Case Study: Why We Chose Offset for 2,500 Beauty Cartons
The opposite happened on a luxury skincare launch.
The customer needed 2,500 reverse-tuck folding cartons for a premium anti-ageing serum.
They initially requested digital printing.
Their reasoning made complete sense. They were a startup, 2,500 units felt cautious and digital seemed like the natural lower-risk option.
Then we looked at the artwork.
The entire brand identity depended on a very clean pastel mint background.
A digital test revealed subtle banding across the large uninterrupted colour area.
The logo also required a strict Pantone spot colour.
This was exactly the type of artwork where the difference between digital and offset became commercially important.
We recommended sheet-fed offset lithography.
The press could run the exact pre-mixed Pantone ink rather than attempting to simulate it from CMYK. The solid background also reproduced far more smoothly.
Spot UV and metallic foil were incorporated into the finishing specification.
Offset setup added roughly £450 to £600 to the initial job.
But at 2,500 units, the per-unit economics were already becoming competitive and visual consistency mattered more to this customer than saving a few days.
They accepted a roughly 12-working-day production path for that specification.
The result matched the positioning the product needed.
When the brand reordered, volume grew to approximately 10,000 units.
At that scale, remaining with offset became straightforward.
The saved production setup and much larger volume reduced their packaging cost per unit by more than 35% compared with the earlier 2,500-unit order.

That is the type of project where custom cosmetic packaging needs to be considered as a brand system, not merely a carton that happens to hold a serum bottle.
When I Would Pay More for Offset
I will recommend offset at a lower quantity when the artwork makes the extra spend worthwhile.
A giant flat field of pastel colour is one example.
An exact corporate Pantone is another.
Extremely fine typography is another.
Some specialised substrates may also favour an offset production route.
Luxury packaging frequently justifies the added setup because a small colour or surface defect becomes much more visible when the rest of the design is restrained.
A minimalist carton actually leaves the printer fewer places to hide.
When the box contains only one colour, a small logo and lots of empty space, every imperfection becomes part of the design.
When I Would Choose Digital Even If Offset Is Cheaper Per Box
The most obvious situation is a multi-SKU business.
A brand selling 20 product variants may technically have enough total volume for offset but not enough volume per artwork file.
Digital lets those businesses aggregate production far more flexibly.
I also favour digital when the packaging is likely to change.
Startups change ingredients.
Cosmetics businesses launch new formulations.
Food brands alter flavours.
Products gain or lose claims.
Barcodes change.
Regulatory text changes.
Seasonal promotions end.
A 15% cheaper box is not a saving if half the inventory becomes obsolete.
Digital is also extremely useful for promotional packaging, influencer mailers, short seasonal runs and launch campaigns where agility has more commercial value than the absolute lowest manufacturing cost.
Repeat Orders Can Strengthen the Offset Case
Offset becomes particularly attractive when one established design will be produced repeatedly.
If printing plates and structural tooling can be preserved and reused, the following run may avoid some of the initial production costs.
In practical quoting, reusing those assets can reduce the offset setup burden substantially, sometimes by around 40% to 60% compared with the original setup component.
That does not mean reorders have zero setup cost.
The press still has to be prepared.
Plates still have to be mounted.
Ink still needs to be loaded and balanced.
Registration still needs checking.
The press may require wash-up.
Material is still consumed during makeready.
I mention this because some buyers assume the second offset run should contain no setup cost simply because “the plates already exist”.
Printing presses do not work that way.
Startups Should Optimise for Learning
For most startups and product tests, my default preference is digital.
The first packaging run teaches you things.
Customers favour one SKU over another.
A box feels slightly too large.
A legal line needs changing.
The logo should move.
A retailer asks for a barcode position change.
Your packing team discovers that one internal component slows fulfilment.
These are cheap lessons when you own 500 boxes.
They can be devastating lessons when you own 10,000.
A startup should therefore optimise not only for manufacturing cost but also for the cost of changing its mind.
Established Products Should Optimise for Scale
An established product behaves differently.
If demand is predictable, artwork is stable, product specifications are unlikely to change and another 10,000 units will probably be ordered afterwards, the inventory risk falls.
At that point, offset's economies of scale become much harder to ignore.
This is where bulk buying makes sense.
Not because “bigger orders are always better”, but because the business has earned enough certainty to benefit from them.
Multi-SKU Brands Need to Think Per Artwork, Not Per Purchase Order
This is one of my strongest opinions on the digital vs offset debate.
Do not say you need 10,000 boxes if those 10,000 boxes consist of 20 designs.
Say you need 500 units of 20 designs.
Those are completely different printing problems.
Digital can move between artwork files without manufacturing a traditional plate set for every variant.
Offset cannot ignore those artwork changes just because the total number on the purchase order is large.
This is why flavour-based food brands, cosmetics businesses, supplements, subscription products and seasonal collections can remain surprisingly strong digital candidates even as overall packaging volumes grow.
Four Things I Want Before Recommending a Print Method
Before asking a supplier to decide between digital and offset, give them:
Those four pieces of information tell me far more than simply hearing “I need 5,000 boxes”.
If the artwork itself is not production-ready yet, how to design packaging for a product covers dielines, proofs, bleed, panel placement and physical sampling before files reach the press.
Never Approve Colour From a Screen Alone
An on-screen PDF is useful for checking wording, placement and general layout.
It is not proof of what ink will look like on physical board.
Screens emit light.
Paper reflects it.
Kraft changes colour.
Uncoated board absorbs differently from coated stock.
Lamination changes surface character.
A Pantone colour on your laptop is not a physical Pantone ink.
For significant production runs, I want the structural specification and material tested appropriately.
A physical CAD sample can confirm size, folding, clearance and structural behaviour.
If colour is mission-critical on an offset job, a physical press proof or properly colour-managed contract proof may also be justified before committing to mass production.

Ask Whether Your Pantone Is Real or Simulated
This is a simple question that can prevent major disappointment:
“Is this a true Pantone spot ink or a CMYK simulation?”
They are not the same thing.
A simulated match may be completely acceptable.
Many brands do not need laboratory-level colour control.
But customers should understand what they are approving.
If a signature colour is central to the identity, ask how the colour will be produced, what board it will be printed onto and what coating or lamination will sit over it.
Check the Fold Before You Approve the Finish
Another question I like is:
“How will this ink and coating behave at the crease?”
Beautiful flat print is not the final product.
Packaging gets scored.
It gets folded.
It gets glued.
It rubs against itself.
It gets stacked and handled.
A digitally printed carton that looks flawless before converting can still show cracking after folding if the board, print layer and crease have not been planned correctly.
This is why print method, material and structural engineering should be decided together.
Watch for Supplier Equipment Bias
A supplier should recommend the method that makes sense for your packaging, not simply the machine they most want to keep running.
I become suspicious when a vendor insists that every small multi-SKU job should go offset.
I am equally suspicious when someone recommends digital for a huge, stable single-design run covered in one critical corporate colour without seriously comparing lithography.
The equipment available to a supplier naturally affects what they sell.
A good packaging partner should still be able to explain why the recommendation makes commercial and technical sense for you.
Mistake One: Chasing the Lowest Unit Price
This is the biggest one.
A low unit cost looks attractive on a spreadsheet.
It does not show money tied up in stock.
It does not show warehousing.
It does not show obsolete packaging.
It does not show what happens when one flavour suddenly outsells another.
Always compare the total commitment.
Mistake Two: Ignoring Setup and Tooling
Make sure quotes are structurally comparable.
Ask whether plate costs, makeready, structural tooling, special inks and finishing setup are included.
A cheap-looking unit price beside a large unexplained setup charge is not a meaningful comparison.
If you want the quote to reflect the actual structure, print and finish combination, you can request a custom packaging quote using the quantity, artwork and material details you already know.
Mistake Three: Assuming Offset Reorders Have No Setup
Reusable plates can improve the economics.
They do not eliminate the labour involved in putting a press back into production.
Ask what is actually reusable and which costs recur every time the job is manufactured.
Mistake Four: Choosing Print Before Checking Finishes
Spot UV, lamination, foil, embossing, debossing and other finishing processes need to work as part of the production sequence.
Do not choose a print method and then assume every finishing treatment can simply be dropped on top afterwards without consequence.
Adhesion, cracking, curing, registration and substrate behaviour all matter.
UK Brands Should Think About Inventory Risk
Printing economics do not stop at the factory door.
Storage matters.
A large offset order might deliver a fantastic unit rate but also occupy several pallets for months.
If warehouse space is expensive, those boxes continue costing money after production.
Some brands are better served by shorter repeat runs or scheduled supply even when the theoretical manufacturing price is slightly higher.
That is a business decision, not merely a printing decision.
Seasonal Deadlines Change the Equation
The final quarter of the year can put pressure on print and finishing capacity.
Seasonal launches, Christmas packaging and promotional projects all compete for production slots.
Offset workflows may require additional plate-making, makeready, drying and finishing stages, so a late artwork approval can quickly create problems.
Digital can sometimes rescue a time-sensitive launch because far less conventional setup sits between artwork and print.
That does not mean digital is automatically “fast” or offset is automatically “slow”.
The full structure, board, finishes and production schedule still decide the actual lead time.
The lesson is to choose earlier.
Regulatory and Product Changes Favour Flexibility
Packaging text is not always permanent.
Ingredients change.
Claims change.
Product formulations change.
Compliance information changes.
Material requirements change.
A business that expects its packaging information to evolve should attach a financial value to the ability to change artwork quickly.
That often strengthens the case for digital print and shorter quantities, even when bulk offset production looks cheaper on paper.
So Which Printing Method Should You Choose?
There is no universal winner.
There is a right method for a specific job.
For a Startup or Test Launch
I usually choose digital.
It protects working capital, keeps quantities manageable and makes future artwork changes relatively painless.
The slightly higher unit price can effectively become the cost of flexibility.
For a new product, flexibility has real value.
For an Established High-Volume Product
I usually choose offset.
If the artwork is stable and demand is predictable, the large-volume economics can be excellent.
At that stage, the business can actually use the inventory it is committing to.
For a Multi-SKU Brand
I usually choose digital.
Ten thousand boxes spread across many artwork files are not economically equivalent to ten thousand identical boxes.

Final Verdict
Digital printing is not the cheap, low-quality alternative to offset that it once had a reputation for being.
Modern industrial digital print can produce extremely impressive retail packaging and is often the smarter commercial choice for startups, short runs, changing artwork, seasonal packs and multi-SKU product lines.
Offset printing still holds important advantages.
It remains my first choice for large stable quantities, exact Pantone requirements, large uninterrupted solid colours and packaging where small print imperfections would undermine the entire visual identity.
The smartest buyer does not ask which technology is universally better.
They ask which technology fits this artwork, this quantity, this box, this launch and this business.
